Hypogymnia australica Elix
     
  in Elix & Jenkins, Mycotaxon 35: 469 (1989). T: 12.6 km E of Bungendore, Great Dividing Ra., N.S.W., 23 Mar. 1977, J.A.Elix 2992; holo: CANB.  
     
  Thallus loosely adnate, to 7 cm wide, pale grey to grey. Lobes subcontiguous centrally, becoming linear-elongate, di- or trichotomously branched, 1–3 mm wide, evenly inflated, hollow; margins lacking lateral contacts. Upper surface convex to ±flattened in older lobes, lacking soredia, smooth, shiny, rarely black-margined. Medulla blackened adjacent to lobe cavity. Lower surface strongly wrinkled, lacking perforations, pale brown at apices. Apothecia common, evenly distributed, 1–5 mm wide, sessile to shortly pedicellate; base urceolate when young; disc concave becoming undulate-distorted, ±shiny, red-brown to dark brown; thalline exciple involute becoming crenate. Ascospores 5–8 × 3.5–4.5 µm. Pycnidia common, subglobose. Conidia bifusiform, 5–6 × 1 µm. CHEMISTRY: cortex K+ yellow; medulla K-, C-, KC+ rose, P-. Atranorin, chloroatranorin, physodic acid (major); oxyphysodic acid, 2'-O-methylphysodic acid (minor); alectoronic acid (trace).
     
  Widespread E of the Great Dividing Ra. in N.S.W.; grows on bark, twigs and dead wood in dry sclerophyll forests.
